RESEARCH DATA:

This woven basket from the collection is a rare version of the Ifugao upig. Upig is commonly used by women to carry personal items such as tobacco or supplies for betel-chewing (Hamilton, 1998). This particular miniature upig is used as a basket for jewellery. Nito fiber is used to construct the basket, a material that came from the nito plant, a local plant that belongs to the fern family. Nito’s long vine, whose colors vary from green to light brown to black, is particularly used to make the fiber for weaving baskets.
