RESEARCH DATA:
This particular basket from the collection is a miniature version of liga-o, a winnowing tray from Barlig, Mount Province, but it is also found in other provinces in the Cordillera Region, including Ifugao and Kalinga. The shape of liga-o is traditionally square and nearly flat. Some variations, like this one from the collection, have a bamboo base, a deeper interior, and are taller. Following hulling, it is primarily used to separate the husk from the rice grain (Capistrano-Baker, 1998; Hamilton, 1986; Lane, 1986). Berry and coffee beans are also sorted using liga-o. In addition, due to its structure, it is also employed as a tool for sun-drying rice grains, coffee beans, and legumes and can serve as a serving container for cooked dishes like meat and rice during communal meals (Capistrano-Baker, 1998; Hamilton, 1986).
