RESEARCH DATA:

These miniature versions of pamahan from Ifugao were used as spice servers. Anthropomorphic figurine carvings are a common feature of pamahan. This assemblage of pamahan is composed of eight miniature bowls, six (6) of which are miniature replicas of pantogtogan, a ritual wine server that features an anthropomorphic figure that carries a bowl.

Pamahan bowls are typically connected to rituals performed by mumbaki or priests (Bulilan, 2007). It would include rice grains, betel nuts, and other ritually significant items when used in ceremonies (Bulilan, 2007). When removed from their ritual functions, pamahan would be used as practical bowls. These miniature bowls from the assemblage, on the other hand, are exclusively used as spice servers.
