Textiles
Textiles are among the embodiments of material expressions of cultures. They hold significant ties to people’s ways of life, such as traditions, ritual activities, everyday life, beliefs, identity, and social status. Whether functional items like blankets, garments, and wearable accessories or any textile item, textiles and the way people use them in their respective contexts reflect aspects of culture.
Locally woven through traditional methods using backstrap looms and footlooms, Cordillera textiles are known for their vibrancy, intricacy, aesthetics, and cultural embeddedness. Women play a vital role in maintaining the weaving traditions in the Cordillera, from making threads and dyeing to setting up looms, weaving, and selling woven outputs.
Nowadays, a decline in the practice of weaving has been observed. Efforts to restore or save the tradition of weaving are ongoing. The introduction of new and cheaper materials like polyester threads is inevitable, but the use of traditional cotton threads is also making a comeback, with local weavers re-embracing traditional materials. Innovations to continue the tradition of weaving have also materialized in the form of new products like table runners, bags, and many other items available in local markets, allowing for the development of contemporary designs while maintaining traditional designs.
