Ceramics & Pottery
Ceramics and pottery in the Luzon Cordillera were either locally produced or acquired from other regions through trade. The locally produced ceramic jars and clay pipes were distributed in many areas of the Cordillera as well as traded to neighboring communities. Some ceramics were purchased from the lowlands that can be traced back as far as mainland China or neighboring parts of Southeast Asia. Just like the other traded goods and objects, ceramics and pottery were regarded as important status markers and heirlooms in many ethnic groups in the Cordillera. Not only did local artisans specialize in making ceramic jars and clay pipes, but they also incorporated local basketworks into the jars to make them more durable. Additionally, designs inspired by tattoo patterns and some abstract motifs were also used to engrave on the jars and pipes.
